Addressing the use of psychotropic medications and ensuring proper mental health treatment for children
Monday, January 12, 2015
12:00 pm - 1:15 pm
Colorado State Capitol Building
Committee Room 356
200 Colfax Avenue
Denver, Colorado 80203
In March 2014, the Denver Post produced a 5-day report detailing the over prescription of psychotropic drugs to Colorado’s youth in foster care. Additionally, in August 2014, a state audit report revealed that children committed to the Division of Youth Corrections were prescribed psychotropic drugs without proper administration and monitoring.
During the first Children's Caucus meeting of 2015 we learned about why these children are prescribed psychotropic medications and the impact that such medication has on their physical and mental health. We also learned about the efforts that Colorado is making to ensure that these young people are not at risk and get the safe and appropriate mental health care they deserve.
Speakers:
Dr. Kathryn Wells: Medical Director of the Denver Health Clinic, Family Crisis Center
Claudia Zundel: Director of Child, Adolescent and Family Services, Colorado Department of Human Services
The links below will provide information from both Children's Caucus speakers as well as the agenda from today's Caucus meeting.
