The legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes in Colorado brings many new and unexpected issues to our state. One of the most critical issues we face is the impact marijuana has on children. These impacts are multiple, varied, and further complicated by the differences between medical and recreational use. This Children’s Caucus presentation presented an overview of the impact marijuana has throughout the life of a child, beginning with prenatal marijuana exposure and throughout childhood.
Specific issues discussed at the Caucus meeting included:
• Prenatal marijuana exposure: What does the research say? What is the law? What is happening in practice?
• Unintentional ingestion: Edible products and childproof packaging, home growing, and homemade edibles.
• Parenting under the influence: Could parental use of marijuana be considered child abuse or constitutional right?
• Parent education on marijuana and appropriate interventions: How can we prevent child abuse with marijuana use in Colorado?
This Children’s Caucus presentation focused on raising awareness of the impacts of marijuana on children. Our presenters will provided context, posed tough questions, and outlined possible next steps for Colorado.
PRESENTATION PANELISTS:
Jade Woodard: Executive Director, Colorado Alliance for Drug Endangered Children
Dr. Kathryn Wells: Medical Director, Denver Health Clinic at the Family Crisis Center
