Carrie Miller - University of Colorado, Denver
Topic: Poverty and Child Welfare in Colorado: Where Can We Go From Here?
Summary
Research shows that there is a continuance of a deeply rooted tradition of reporting practices that have disproportionately targeted those living under the poverty line. Our current Human Services Agencies no longer needs to be anchored to established notions of abuse and deviancy within the welfare system; yet, time and time again situations are handled with rampant implicit bias and the major masking of issues (Roberts, 268). This presentation will confront this historical injustice within our system and take steps towards systemic change - the creation of a new paradigm in which parents are set up for success, and not one in which parents below the poverty line are caught navigating a system that has set them up to fail.
