SENATOR NEWELL BRINGS LEGISLATIVE FORCES TOGETHER DURING SECOND YEAR OF BIPARTISAN CHILDREN'S CAUCUS
Colorado Legislative Members Begin Sustained Look at Issues Affecting Colorado Children
January 14 - (Denver, CO) The first meeting of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly Colorado Children’s Caucus will be held Monday, continuing to build upon the success of last year’s bipartisan caucus created to provide legislative members with a unique opportunity to come together, put politics aside, and talk about the issues most affecting Colorado children.
Sen. Linda Newell, Co-Chair and creator of the Colorado Children’s Caucus convened the group to examine historic trends, data, and evidence-based best practices in search of improvements in services or solutions to meet the challenges facing children and families. “We strive for the education, well-being and prevention of harm of youth by exploring promising initiatives for improving the lives of all Colorado children,” stated Senator Linda Newell (D-Littleton). “The Children’s Caucus’ priority is to examine historic trends, data, and evidence-based best practices in search of improvements in services or solutions to meet the challenges facing children and families.”
This year, through additional staff support provided by the Office of Strategic Initiatives at Tennyson Center for Children at Colorado Christian Home, the Children’s Caucus will receive regular presentations throughout the session on issues impacting children, including the study of Indoor Marijuana Grow Operations and its adverse health risks to children, the prevention of child abuse in Colorado, and educational outcomes for all youth. Legislators will have the opportunity to learn about various child systems and initiatives and request information from the child-serving community, in addition to receiving a central tracking of all proposed legislation affecting children.
This first meeting of more than twenty legislative members, led by Sen. Linda Newell and Rep. Jonathan Singer, Co-chairs of the Colorado Children’s Caucus, will get a first look at the Children’s Caucus’ new website and legislative online tools to help facilitate a sustained look at children and families issues in Colorado.

Senator Newell Hosts Legislature's First Bipartisan Children's Caucus Today
Democrats and Republicans join forces to discuss important children's issues
March 19, 2012 (DENVER, CO) – Today marked the first official meeting of the bipartisan Senate Children’s Caucus created by Senator Linda Newell (D-Littleton). This organization will help legislators focus on how they can more effectively support Colorado children, and ensure that none are being left behind. Each meeting of the caucus will have a guest speaker and work toward keeping the lines of communication open between different areas of child services in the state and the legislature.
Senator Newell offered the following comment on the Children’s Caucus today:
“The Children’s Caucus provides us with a unique opportunity to come together, put politics aside and talk about the issues most affecting Colorado children. Our children are our future business and community leaders, so as lawmakers we should be doing everything we can to ensure their protection, health and well being.”
Senator Newell has been a champion for children throughout her legislative career. She has sponsored legislation to construct the Child Protection Ombudsman Office, advance restorative justice programs for youth, improve and increase access to early childhood services, improve the child fatality review team and strengthen protections for children in foster care.
The Children’s Caucus currently includes Senator Irene Aguilar (D-Denver), Senator Bob Bacon (D-Fort Collins), Senator Joyce Foster (D-Denver), Senator Angela Giron (D-Pueblo), Senator Rollie Heath (D-Boulder), Senator Mary Hodge (D-Brighton), Senator Michael Johnston (D-Denver), Senator Kevin Lundberg (R-Berthoud), Senator Shawn Mitchell (R-Broomfield), Senator Jeanne Nicholson (D-Gilpin County), Senator Scott Renfroe (R-Greeley), Senator Gail Schwartz (D-Snowmass), Senator Nancy Spence (R-Centennial),Senator Jean White (R-Hayden) and Senator Suzanne Williams (D-Aurora).
Today’s speaker was Bob Coulson, Adolescent Services Administrator with the Colorado Department of Human Services, who gave a briefing on the “Permanency by Design” and Three Branch Institute initiatives. These initiatives are working on reducing children entering into the foster care system and finding permanent homes for those who do. The Children’s Caucus will meet again on April 9.
